How Do I Become A Budtender?
To work in the cannabis industry, all applicants must complete the Sellsafe course and Qualified Cannabis Worker (QCW) application process through the Alberta Gaming, Liquor, and Cannabis Commission (AGLC)
Step 1: Obtain A Police Background Check
Get a Police Background check from your local police station. (Online or third-party criminal records checks will NOT be accepted with the exception of Edmonton Police Service (EPS) or Calgary Police Service (CPS)). Costs may vary and take up to 2-3 weeks to receive. Police checks must be dated within the last 3 months.

Step 2: Complete the SellSafe Training
Complete AGLC SellSafe training. This requires about 3-4 hours of online training.

Step 3: Submit My QCW Package to AGLC
Download and complete the AGLC QCW application form. See Requirements for retail staff | AGLC
Email or mail your QCW Application form, a copy of your SellSafe License, your police background check, and a copy of your passport or birth certificate.

Do I need a QCW or Sell Safe Certification to work in the Cannabis Industry?

How long does it take to get my QCW?
This process involves a few things! In order to get your QCW status, you need to apply with your Sell Safe certification and police background check. The Sell Safe certification process is online, and usually takes an individual 2-4 hours to complete. The police background check can take up to 3 weeks to obtain, so it is recommended that this is done first. You can then mail or deliver your QCW application to a designated AGLC office. It typically takes the AGLC 2-6 weeks to approve the QCW applications.
Can I get my QCW Faster?
You can cut off a few days if you drop off your application in-person at a designated AGLC office! Sometimes you can call the AGLC to plead your case and ask for an expedited review of your application.
